Welcome. This thread was created by the now retired oneyoudontknow, as a way of organizing a collective effort for fixing incorrectly added split albums on MA. We ask for your help in this process.

What is an incorrectly added split album? In short, a split album is a release that is shared between two or more bands, with a maximum of five bands. It contains contributions from each band. The guidelines and technicalities behind adding a split to a band on MA can be confusing to users... and can often lead to incorrectly added splits. Such splits usually lack all track information, are not linked correctly to the necessary band pages, or are simply labeled/formatted wrongly. We within this thread are dedicated users intent on making sure those splits are re-added properly.

If you wish to be one of those users, by all means please join us. Below you will find a list of splits that still need to be corrected. For the most part, many of these splits can not be easily fixed as the tracklists for many of them remain unknown and can not be found on the internet easily. BUT, even if you don't know how to fix one of these splits in the list, but do know its full tracklist, please let us know! Any help is better than no help!

A step-by-step description for adding splits can be found in MA's help file. Those guidelines are reiterated and expanded on at the end of this post. Ask questions, and we will answer them for you.

Some splits may require some investigation in order to find out all tracks, the order of the bands on the split, and whether or not it has been released.

Adding a split album for more than one band is a little more complicated. The procedure depends on if all the bands featured on the split are already in the database.

  1. If ALL the bands on the split are on the site, you should select the "add a split release" option from the first band on the split's update menu. You will have to first enter the data above like an ordinary release, but you will have to enter the number of additional bands (meaning, if 2 bands participate for the album, enter "1") first. Then you will have to find the unique #ID for the additional band(s). It would have been easier for you to enter the band's name, but since some bands might have the same name it is simpler to go with the band's unique identification number.
You have several ways to find a band's ID number; it's not difficult if you're somewhat observant. You can browse the Encyclopaedia's lists and point the mouse over the band's name, and look down in the STATUS bar at the bottom of your browser (if you don't see it, open the band page in a new window and watch the URL in the Address bar of your browser): you will see the URL for the band's page, which has an ID parameter after the ? mark. You can also go to the band's page and find the ID by checking the URL for pages such as the Update or Add new data links.

When you have found the IDs you need, the application will find the corresponding band(s) for you. Make sure the ID is valid or you will get an error message and will have to try again. But you only need to enter the split album once, and it will be listed for all the participating bands.

Here is an example of how it should look:
    http://metal-archives.com/release.php?id=21270
  2. If one or more bands on the split are not featured on the site, you will need to add the album separately on each participating band's page. You should select the "add a single-CD release" option from the band's update menu, then choose "split album" as the release type from the drop-down list. When it prompts you for the number of tracks, put in the total number of tracks for all bands on the split. In the additional notes, make a list detailing which tracks are by which band like this:

    Tracks 1-7 by Band 1
    Tracks 8-19 by Band 2

If more than one band from the split is on the site, please make the list like this, with the bands that are on the site having links, and the ones that are not in bold, using HTML code:

    Tracks 1-8: <a href='band.php?id=band1_ID'>Band 1</a>
    Tracks 9-28: <a href='band.php?id=band2_ID'>Band 2</a>
    Tracks 29-42: <b>Band 3</b>
    Tracks 43-53: <a href='band.php?id=band4_ID'>Band 4</a>

Once that is done, add the tracks (as well as the lyrics, cover art and durations if possible) for each band in their appropriate track numbers.

Here is an example of how it should look:
    http://metal-archives.com/release.php?id=215148
  3. For incorrect splits that have reviews, please mention that they have reviews when you fix them. The reviews can be moved.
  4. For all splits, there is a small caveat about release titles. If there is no official title for the split, please do not simply title it "Split". Rather title it by the order the bands appear on the split (eg. "Agathocles / Bad Acid Trip / Disgorge", with a space between the slashes). If each band has a separate title for their side of the split, use that instead. If the split as a whole has a single title, then use that. Priority always goes to choosing the most appropriate title.
  5. This split release is an exception. Do not attempt to add it in a similar way! It is impossible to do this.
  6. Collaboration albums are NOT split albums.
  7. DVD / video might be difficult to add.. there have been errors recently. Please report them in this thread before adding them.

Again... help on fixing this mess would be really great. Questions should be asked in this thread and we can solve them then.

Please 'report' in this thread the splits that have been fixed. Derigin will remove the incorrect splits from the database and from this list.

I don't know about that, but you sure are dim-witted to say the very fucking least.

Oneyoudontknow, how would you have these splits "corrected" ?
If you could elaborate a bit...

Seems like it's splits with incorrect track listing- tracks by one of the bands listed in the additional notes instead of the track listing, etc.

What to do:
1. if not all tracks are available at the entry, then try to find them (google, label, contact etc.)
2. If the tracks are added to the profile, but are added wrongly, then make sure that the new entry will contain the right information; just because the counting of the tracks starts witn a 1 does not necessarily mean that their order is also this way; again... some research is necessary.
3. In case of a wrongly added split, it needs to be changed to a split album.
If more than one MA band appears on the release, then you can use this kind of coding in the additional notes to make it look good:

Tracks 1-8: <a href='band.php?id=3540257258'>Long Suffering</a>
Tracks 9-28: <a href='band.php?id=3540257246'>Rehumanize</a>
Tracks 29-42: Corpse Under Construction
Tracks 43-53: <a href='band.php?id=49085'>Eternal Mystery</a>

I will update the list this evening... please let me know if there are fixed ones so that the list will get shorter. Thanks again for any help.

From the search on the 'grind' band's sites I can say that some profiles are quite messed up and have a good deal of wrongly added releases. There was also one that had no tracklist left at all ... and also the cover was gone.

Has some started to fix some of the releases, yet?

I'm under 300 points away from Veteran status, I'm sure there might be a couple of these awry splits laying around for me to fix up by the time I get to 500.

Although missing covers don't need Veteran status to fix... I'll see what I can do.

Cool... please report which band you have updated and I will remove them from the list.

If you are not sure how to fix something, then ask...

As the splits are fixed, if posters would kindly give the name of the band/release that they have properly re-added, this would allow mods to come along and delete the bad entries.

You don't need to be a veteran to help. You can just re-add the split and then, as Nightgaunt wrote, let us know that the old entry can be deleted.

I talked with Nightgaunt on the matter and the I will quote his remark to my question on the issue on how to fix the releases:

Nightgaunt wrote:
[...]I would think that the best thing to do would be to re-add all splits with tracklists like this using the proper procedure, taking one's best guess as to the order that the participating bands perform in where necessary. My reasoning here is twofold. For one, the number of cases where no information of any kind is available as to the order the bands perform in is apt to be comparatively very small. Also, even if the new order should turn out to be incorrect, the future version of the site will make handling/modifying of splits easier/simpler. Bearing this in mind, splits with bands in the wrong order but that have been otherwise correctly added will be easier to fix in the future than those that have been left in the fractured/incomplete state, [...]

-> [emphasis supplied]

It is of course best to do some investigation on each split album, especially as a lot of them are lacking of information like line-up, amount of copies etc. Good results have been achieved by contacting bands, labels or whatever migth be seen as a source of information.

Some splits need some delicate handling: split albums with more than two bands.

I like to draw everyones attention towards this way of fixing them:
http://www.metal-archives.com/release.php?id=205437

As the split album cannot provide the links a split generally does, with the use of HTML code it is possible to do it in a neat way:

(from the additional notes)
Tracks 1-8: <a href='band.php?id=3540257258'>Long Suffering</a>
Tracks 9-28: <a href='band.php?id=3540257246'>Rehumanize</a>
Tracks 29-42: <b>Corpse Under Construction</b>
Tracks 43-53: <a href='band.php?id=49085'>Eternal Mystery</a>

(<b></b>; <u></u>; can also be used to emphasize the non-MA bands)

I really recommend to do it this way, because:
- easier access to other participating bands on the split
- bands that are not on this site could be easily identified.

Again... help on fixing this mess would be really great. Questions should be asked in this thread and we can solve them then.

Please 'report' in this thread also the releases which have been fixed. I will remove them from the list then.

I have a question: let's take, for example, this release - http://www.metal-archives.com/release.php?id=132674

If I got it right, in order to fix it I should: Add new release -> Split album -> List all tracks (by all participating bands) -> Specify which tracks are performed by which band in additional notes, like "Tracks 1-4 by band X, tracks 4-8 by band Y". Right?

All bands in the MA-> SPLIT
NOT all bands in the MA -> SPLIT ALBUM

Please, before you start fixing the release, try to find the correct order of the tracks.

Here's the old one: http://www.metal-archives.com/release.php?id=132674

And here's the new one: http://www.metal-archives.com/release.php?id=206178

If everything's done right, then the old one should be deleted. Both from the list and the database.

Thank you for the help on this issue.

There a good deal of releases which have the complete tracklist in the additional notes. These are the easy one. Harder to fix are those that have such an entry in the additional notes: only the tracks of X have been added. Such have I seen a lot of time.

This one would be an example on how to add HTML code to the additional notes:

^ fixed the error.

I always add the term FIXED or CORRECT to the title. Makes it easier to distinguish them from the messed up ones.

Also an advice. If a split album does not have an explicit title, please name it this way: 'Band X / Band Y / Band Z'. If 4 or 5 bands participate a split, thus making the format too long, then simply put it '4-way split'. Don't use this format: 'Split with band X' or 'Split w/ band X'. The later case often happans when one of the participating bands is not in MA. A bad example is found here:
http://www.metal-archives.com/release.php?id=69820
Making the title 'Agathocles / Krush' looks better.
Please consider integrating it into common rules for editing split albums.

please write reports on the releases that have been re-added and fixed.

Please make clear on the band's site which albums have been fixed; terms fixed/correct. Makes ti easier to differentiate them from the wrongly added ones.

When the old ones have been deleted by the mods, then I will take them from the list.

Two releases added to the list. They need to be re-added.

Hi, I can't help fixing because i don't have enough score, I just can send report. Anyway, the guidelines are good, but I continue to think that it would be a very useful information to add which music genre play the band that it's not in the archive. This may be useful, exspecially for the Grindcore splits, in two ways:

1. you can figure out which genre play the other band and why they aren't in the archive;
2. secondly, if the band that isn't in the archive is labeled as Grindcore, you can check if they are Metal enough to be added.

Take for example the Agathocles page. They have an inredible amount of splits, here you guess why the other band isn't in the archive http://www.metal-archives.com/release.php?id=206204 , here you don't any idea about what the other band play: http://www.metal-archives.com/release.php?id=67447

Maybe this can be implemented in Version 2.0

Here is a tricky one:

Demisor/ CSSO split

Originally released as a split EP; 7".
later re-released as a split tape with bonus tracks.
(not difficult so far...)

these are the entries at the MA
(and now it is getting tricky):
split:
http://www.metal-archives.com/release.php?id=69995
split album:
http://www.metal-archives.com/release.php?id=47559

Background infos on CSSO:
http://csso666.hp.infoseek.co.jp/ep.html
http://csso666.hp.infoseek.co.jp/comple ... split.html

Fixed this way:
http://www.metal-archives.com/release.php?id=206335

Right this way?

Damn, I deleted it from the Abortion page by mistake. Here it is:
http://www.metal-archives.com/release.php?id=206321
http://www.metal-archives.com/release.php?id=206318
http://www.metal-archives.com/release.php?id=206339

oneyoudontknow: Why did you add 20 untitled tracks? Those pages say that it has only 15.

I've just deleted the album in the Agathocles reports. It's better to report those albums here, because there are hundreds of reports right now, so it's likely that your reports will stay buried there for a while.

Huh? There are fifteen... the first five tracks are from the other band.

Thanks for cleaning the reports. Future ones will be posted here.

and as we are currently fixing so many releases, I would like to ask if this one should be revamped, too:
http://www.metal-archives.com/release.php?id=75464
see here:
http://eyeless666.interfree.it/disco.htm
it is a four track 7". The "Disc 1" in the submitted releases suggests that it had been been added as a multiple CD release. Can this be fixed somehow?
